Use case

The user moment

A career changer opens their library's career tools to finally update their resume. The old builder hands them endless dropdowns to click in and out of, plus an empty page, then asks them to write every line by hand. Most close the tab before they have something they'd send.

Step 02 / 05
Problem

The problem

Across 8+ customer calls, one line kept coming up: "Users don't know how to get started or what to put on the resume." That's blank-page fatigue: what to include, how to write bullets, what ATS is, how to tailor for a job.

We partnered with a subject matter expert to make it clear and intuitive, with real rules and best practices built in. Then we used AI to build guided flows that take the tedious steps of resume building out of the way. It's all in one tool.

Step 03 / 05
Validated

How I validated it

8+ customer callsOne line kept coming back: "Users don't know how to get started or what to put on the resume."
Subject matter expertCo-built the 20+ point quality rubric every AI prompt had to pass, and built real rules and best practices into the flows.
12+ testing roundsAI as judge, scored against the expert's rubric, across 80+ versions of 4+ system prompts until the resumes were accurate. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Cohere and others were tested, then built on secure AWS Bedrock with Claude and Amazon Nova.
Usage dataHigh engagement, but under 30% of sessions ended in an export. About 70% bounced without creating a resume they could tangibly use.
Step 04 / 05
Decided

Decisions I made

AI only earns trust if the output is good enough to send.

ConsideredOne generic AI writer
Chose4 AI-assisted flows
Each section of a resume needs a different kind of help: Generate with AI, Upload and Improve, Upload and Improve LinkedIn, and an AI Writing Assistant.
ConsideredShip prompts once they "look good"
ChoseA 20+ point rubric, built with a career expert
A bad resume costs someone a job, so quality had to be checkable, not a feeling.
ConsideredAI for everyone
ChoseOpt-in AI help, so anyone can write it themselves
3 librarians told me directly that users don't trust AI and institutions want it optional. 86% of users opt in.
Step 05 / 05
Measured

How I measured it

Do they leave with a resume?83%export rate across 5,411 resumes, up from under 30% before
Is it fast for a first-timer?<9 minfor a first-time user to a polished, tailored resume
Do users like it?91%approval in user feedback
What I'd change

Go to customers constantly. The hard part was making an AI writing assistant with several complex flows clear for people with little technical expertise. It's built for library patrons, students landing a first job, and workforce centers helping the recently laid off. Talking to the people who sit with those users every day is what made it clear. Next time I'd make that a standing habit from day one.
